When Idiot Box Attacks February 8, 2011

Filed under: Others — beabots keniston @ 7:47 PM

I have always been a fan of the couch – of the couch with an idiot box in front. My weekends and after-work hours always consist of movie or tv series marathons with my husband who is also a couch potato. Perfect pair, eh? My little affair with the television set has gone up another notch with our recent subscription to Netflix – more sci-fi and dark comedies for Max, more tv shows for me to conquer and watch!

I know you are shaking your head right now. “Tsk. Lazy arse!”. Hey! I do house chores before or between marathons!

Here is a list of movies/tv shows and the like that I have seen and enjoyed so far:
1. Two movies by John Waters: Pecker and A Dirty Shame. I specially liked Pecker because it revolved around photography. And the (not-so-hardcore) Catholic in me is revealed whenever Pecker’s Grandma’s image of the Virgin Mary says “Full of grace! Full of grace!”. Truth be told, I got goosebumps whenever I’d hear that line.

2. Bride Trafficking Unveiled. This is a documentary by Laura Barry shown on Current TV centering on mail order brides from the Philippines and (mostly) Thailand who dream to find a better (not bitter) half in the UK. I have read bad and good feedback about the docu. Some said that it only showcased the bad side of the whole issue that is brides-by-mail. Others said it was “selective journalism”. You decide. It was an interesting topic for me and my husband as I am from the Philippines and has immigrated to the US to marry Max (an American). And no, I am not a mail-order bride. Jeez.

Here’s a link for the documentary: http://current.com/groups/on-current-tv/92357386_bride-trafficking-unveiled.htm

3. Skins (UK) A show about teen drama revolving around sex, drugs, a lot of swearing, more sex and life. The cast is replaced every two years/ two seasons which gives the tv show more breathing room for showcasing different characters and acting skills. My husband and I have both agreed that Chris is the best actor for the 1st batch and Cook for the 2nd batch. I have seen Series 1 -4 up to episode 1 of Season 5.

The US version has just hit it off on MTV. I have watched not a single episode from the US version but I am tempted to check it out, for comparison’s sake.

4. Shameless. A scrabble and facebook buddy of mine has suggested that I watch this series. Comcast on demand has up to 5 episodes of the first season which turns out to be the US version. It topbills William H. Macy who is a great actor. He plays an alcoholic father to 6 children. I also have the UK version for the 1st season but I have yet to watch them. I just learned yesterday that the gorgeous James McAvoy is in the series. Oh lal la. =)

5. Crank Yankers. A show about prank calls made to real “victims”. Pardon my use of the word victims. Comedians like Jimmy Kimmel (and his two kids), Jim Florentine and Adam Carollla are behind the prank callers’ voices. Puppets are used to re-enact the call. Get the picture yet?

I would add more to my list but the telly is calling on me. =)
